* Virtual Communities are informational and emotional support groups that form because of shared commonality
and/or interest. Virtual Communities are unique in the fact that people from all over the world can interact and share
information regardless of geographical location. Virtual Communities has many advatages, like;
-
People can share information, anytime,
there are no restrictions.
-
Virtual Communities can be in any
language and can also foster relations with
a multitude of racial, ethnic and economic
backrounds.
-
They allow people with different expertise
and/or perspectives to come
together and brainstorm, which creates more effective
outcomes (Sabella 3).
According to Susan Barnes, "Building virtual communities requires four criteria: a name, the use of civil language,
growth and continuity, and a group history" (230). A community needs to have norms or rules inorder to remain viable.
The focus of this website will be directed to three different types of Virtual Communities, they are;
Support Communities
Communities of Interest
Audience Communities
